Healthcare in Canada for newcomers
Canada’s public healthcare is run by provinces and territories. Most permanent residents get coverage, but there is often a waiting period — so know your options before you arrive or right after.

Each province and territory has its own health insurance plan and its own rules for when newcomers become eligible. Some have a waiting period of up to three months; private or employer insurance can bridge the gap. Quebec has its own system (RAMQ).
Finding a doctor
Some Canadians have a family doctor; others use walk-in clinics or nurse-led clinics. Settlement agencies can help you find care and register with a clinic in your area.
In an emergency
For a life-threatening emergency, call 911 anywhere in Canada. For non-emergencies, walk-in clinics, telehealth lines, and 811 (where available) can help you decide what to do.
