Accessibility at New Roots Canada

We are building this platform to be usable by everyone arriving in Canada, including people who use screen readers, keyboard-only navigation, large text, or a second language. Accessibility is part of how we build, not an add-on. Some features are here today; we are still improving the rest.

Screen reader support

Pages use clear headings, landmarks and labels. Images have text descriptions, and changes are announced.

Keyboard navigation

Every action can be reached with the Tab key. A “Skip to content” link jumps past the menu, and the focus is always visible.

Large text

Use the Accessibility menu to enlarge text in four steps. Your choice is remembered on this device.

High contrast

Turn on high contrast for stronger borders and darker text against the background.

Reduce motion

Turn on reduce motion to calm animations and transitions.

Voice input

In the assistant, tap the microphone to ask a question by speaking, in your language.

Read aloud

In the assistant, answers can be read out loud so you can listen instead of read.

Multilingual access

The app works in English and French, and the page language is set correctly for screen readers.

Clear navigation

A consistent menu, a current-page highlight, and a back path on every screen.

Accessible forms

Every field has a label, required fields are marked, and errors are shown next to the field they belong to.

Clear error messages

Errors are shown in plain language, with a screen-reader announcement, and they tell you how to fix the problem.

How to use these features

  • Text size, high contrast and reduce motion: open the Accessibility menu in the sidebar (or under the menu on a phone) and choose what helps. Your choice is saved on this device.
  • Skip to content: press Tab once on any page to reveal the “Skip to content” link, then press Enter to jump past the menu.
  • Voice: in the assistant, use the microphone to speak your question, and the read-aloud button to hear the answer.
  • Language: switch between English and French from the language control in the menu.

If something is hard to use

If a part of this app is not accessible to you, please tell us what happened and we will work to fix it. We aim to respond to accessibility reports first. Contact support through the app, and include the page and what you were trying to do.

This statement describes our current work and will grow as the platform improves.
